Commercial Architecture: 106 East Liberty Adaptive Re-Use

Location: Wheaton, IL

The scope of this adaptive reuse project included the restoration and change of use occupancy of a two story brick building that was originally built as a farm implement store, and dated back nearly 100 years to Wheaton’s agricultural past. Recent tenants included an office supply store, a furniture store and a retail florist. The interior has been completely renovated, and the occupancy has been changed to office/business use. The original tin ceiling has been completely restored. Hidden behind soffits and exterior signage, the original leaded glass windows were uncovered and completely restored. A new custom fabricated kitchen for employee convenience was built by Mike Wilson of Hummingbird Woodworks. The second floor also has been completely renovated, new bathrooms and extensive restoration of the original millwork and flooring. The exterior has received a new bluestone patio, stone fireplace and ADA compliant entrance.
